Custom authentication with tomcat

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to go about implementing a custom
authentication mechanism for tomcat. My application
requires various fields other than username/password
and authentication has to be done via an existing
server (not a web server or a database).

I've been unable to find anything in the documentation
or via google. I'm assuming that there is an interface
somewhere that I can implement and tell tomcat to use,
is that correct?
