Front Page Extensions

Is Front Page Extensions a requirement in order to create ASP.NET Web App
using VS.NET? I have always used it, but I am now wondering if its required
or not. I know you can also use a UNC share; but does anyone use that method?

Not needed any more, except on servers that cannot be contacted via file
share. It is a bit more of a pain, initially, to not use extensions (except
with Windows Server 2003, which is easy to contact either way), but the
initial pain is easily overcome.
