please help with this strange problem!!

looks like i may have to do a complete re-install of windows:-(

If this is still the issue about the links not showing up in your
browser, I would guess that the issue is not windows. But more like
you are typing in a different URL, or pointing to a different server.

I don't know, I just like using the same browser 85%+ of the visitors

it's just a browser.

I understand, of course. That's why we always test in IE5, 5.5 and 6.0,
but our sites are designed to be around for more than a year, and IE's
share is dropping off *rapidly* - so, rather than design for IE and
'fix' for other browsers, we design to the standards and fully validate
our sites (which most modern browsers, apart from IE, render fine) and
then fix the pages for IE if there are specific issues. It doesn't add
much work right now, but it'll save us LOADS of work in the future. It's
not so much about what people are using now, but what they will be using
a year from now...

well this is killing me now, i cant figure this out, ive updated everything,
uninstalled explorer and re-installed checked for viruses. spyware etc.
re-made the page, tested the other pages, i have absolutely no idea whats
going on. im in a few different forums and discussion groups and it looks
like no-one has an clue what it might be. i searched on this topic and found
a few others that have experienced the same, but only a few, and a lonfg
time ago, so its hard to contact them.

thanx for the overwhelming response to my post BTW.

steve

Fire over the page source and we can take a look.

W

Webcastmaker

Well it's true... is shows a real lack of experience. It's well worth
the effort getting to know another browser.

I know quite a few other browsers, I know why they are "better" than
IE, and I don't disagree with why they are better. But I still like
to see the web the way the overwhelming majority of the rest of the
world sees it.

Seems to be working here okay. I like the optical illusions page btw, very
fun :) I don't seem to be having any problems with the links using Opera.

When you emptied the cache earlier, did you close and restart IE
afterwards?

Can I assume that the links in question are the ones in div id "Layer 1"?
If so, I agree with you that they are not in the source code of your page at
http://www.stephen-hunter.com
I have had this problem. I had a site on my ISP's server and decided to get
a domain and host it somewhere else where I could have server-side
accomadations. I have maintained both sites so far because I don't want to
let go. However, when I upload any change, I have to make sure I upload to
both servers. I have messed that up a couple of times and when I tried to
view my newly altered site (on the other server) it hadn't changed. I don't
know if that is your problem, but just in case.. Also check that you have
uploaded the changed file into the correct directory on the server. That one
can bite you, too.

On that horizontal scroll problem... You might have to put some width
control on your JS menu.

Do you have JavaScript turned off in your browser? I normally do.

I wondered what links you were talking about so I viewed the source
and I find all this JavaScript stuff. I reloaded the page with
JavaScript turned on, and lo, there is a menu that wants to float
around all over the place (and give a horizontal scrollbar that goes
on forever).

Frankly, the menu is annoying.

thanx stephen, the strange thing is that its only the links that dont appear
when i update the page, if i put a picture in, there is no problem, it goes
up and displays perfectly well.
the server i am using is from speicherhosting.de, and its just webspace i am
renting from them, so i think everything is cool there. the uploaded files
are in the right directorys too.

My contribution to the drop off will be tomorrow -- I'll be installing

on a few.)

Going to have to figure out if I can play music over the Tannoy system

I do support Open Source: I use Linux as my main OS (only use Windows for

I use Opera as my primary browser. It's the best browser out there - end
