screen resolution

Is there an easy way for the server to get the screen resolution of a
browser window?

If you knew, you might do a number of things:

1. select an appropriate style sheet.

2. use narrower or wider layouts

3. use different sized icons and images.

4. smaller or larger pages.

You will need to have som JavaScript send something to the
server with the size.

I am not convinced that it is a good idea.

You can do funky things with max-width on images so they shrink in
smaller spaces, but never expand beyond their natural size. Suitability
of this technique depends on how important scaled-image quality is, and
on the range of widths you expect to cover.

I watched Charlie Rose interview Marc Andreessen (Mr. Netscape). He is
a great interview with a good head for the big picture.

He pointed out the technical reasons the iPhone made such a splash. He
felt a range of wireless devices are about to explode,
iPhone,
Kindle (now holds 1500 books with 2 week battery life).
Netbook.

As fibre was lulling us into forgetting about conserving bandwidth,
stupendous cell-phone access charges are making it important again.

Ever greater intelligence and storage at both ends should let us use
bandwidth more parsimoniously than ever before.
