Seeking an RSS aggregator

T

Tristan Miller

Greetings.

I'm looking for an RSS aggregator with the following set of features. If
anyone can recommend a specific package, please let me know.

(1) It should handle all the common versions of RSS (0.9x, 1.0, 2.0),
including the ill-formed files commonly found on the web. Atom would be
nice too.

(2) It should output to HTML for viewing in a web browser. Most RSS feeds
I read contain embedded HTML with links to websites, so I want to read my
feeds in Mozilla instead of some custom interface.

(3) Items from different channels should be aggregated and sorted by date.
I don't want to read channel by channel; I want the newest items first,
regardless where they come from.

(4) The package must be available for Solaris or GNU/Linux. Even better if
it's Free Software or Open Source; I'll probably want to tweak the source
code.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Tristan

Pop over to the Mozilla web page and take a look at the various
plug-ins. They have a great RSS feed that does exactly what you want and
just plugs right into the browser. You get a sidebar with the feed
source at the top, all the items in the selected feed at the bottom
(sorted, if you want them sorted) and selecting any of those pops up the
linked page in the main browser window.

Do you happen to remember the name of this plugin? There is one I've
already tried, called NewsMonster <http://www.newsmonster.org/>, but it's
so buggy as to be completely useless. I couldn't even get it to subscribe
to an RSS feed.

Have you tried rssOwl (sourceForge.net) or bloglines
(http://www.bloglines.com) ?

Greetings.

Have you tried rssOwl (sourceForge.net) or bloglines
(http://www.bloglines.com) ?

Bloglines is almost exactly what I am looking for, except that it does not
support channel aggregation (#3 above) so far as I can tell, and it seems
that I cannot install it locally (#4).

As for RSSOwl, sourceforge.net is currently having problems with its
download server, so I can't obtain it. From browsing the documentation,
it looks like it uses a GUI rather than a web browser as its primary
interface, so I'm skeptical as to whether it will be of use.

Tristan

Mozilla Firefox RSS extensions listed at

Coming version of Firefox with native feed support, check

I'm very happy with Forumzilla:

<http://forumzilla.mozdev.org/>

It's an extension for Mozilla Thunderbird and Mozilla Mail for reading
news and blog feeds (all flavors of RSS plus Atom). It should work with
all OSes.
