BNF for XML Schema?

Does anyone here know of serious attempts in constructing a BNF for XML Schema? All I can find is this thread:
http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-xml-schema-comments/2001OctDec/0039.html in which the answer refers to the specification being in draft.

What has happened since?

What do parser constructors use, when they cannot get a "real" BNF from W3C - do they really, every one of them, start all over from scratch ('scratch' being the specification)?
