custom web control

Hi all, I wish to write some custom web controls that build on current
controls such as the html input text box etc. e.g. a phone number control
that will have 3 text boxes. I have been able to do this with usercontrols
(ascx files) but the down side is I have to maintain the file in multiple
website folders. Is there anyway I can build a dll and register in the GAC?
If yes, can someone point me in the right direction on how to do this?

It sounds like you want a more sophisticated "custom control" instead of a
simpler "user control."
