Elements ID lost on postback

I am creating a web control with ASP.NET. I am using ClientID all the
time to be able to identify the controls (images, checkboxes, tr,
td....) by using document.getElementById().
On postaback, sometimes these IDs are lost, and sometimes not.

Does anybody knows what is the criteria to loss an IDs on a postback
