Event Listeners and innerHTML

let's say you have a DIV that contains submit buttons that have events
attached to them using addEventListener.

now lets say that you replace the innerHTML of that DIV with new
content that does not include any objects to attach events to.

what happens to those event listeners? should i be manually removing
them prior to the innerHTML replacement?
