Floppy Jellopy,

I A great word, and yes from my own admission, I could have entitled it
differently...just as the original response from Juan could have been put in
a more helpful manner rather than obtuse and borderline offensive - this
could have been my first time ever to use a newsgroup. As it happens, it
wasnt the first time, and hence I took the jibe on the chin...

Juan,

I did what you suggest, and it makes sense to attempt to diagnose the
problem from a minimal state set, so I decided to nuke IIS completely,
removing inetpub, inetsrv and any other reference I could get my hands on.
I deleted the IUSR and IWAM accounts, along with the ASPNET account. After
rebooting the machine and reinstalling IIS 5.1 on its own, I then attempted
to access http://localhost/iishelp and I get different problems now - I
expected this part to work. The two errors are:

Error 1: DCOM Error:
DCOM got error "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. " and was
unable to logon .\IWAM_KILLER in order to run the server:

{3D14228D-FBE1-11D0-995D-00C04FD919C1}

Error 2: W3SVC Error:

The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT/IISHELP'. The error
was 'The server process could not be started because the configured identity
is incorrect. Check the username and password.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

For some unknown reason, the KB's number has changed.
That isn't under my control, as explained before.

Here's the new link ( to the same content... ) :

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/555375

Maybe you should try not to be so trigger-happy the next time, Tom.

Not making sure you, at least, have a reasonably guilty target before
firing away would help doesn't make you look too good yourself, amigo.

In fact, it could be said that the supercilious one is none
other than yourself, in the light of the circumstances.

This gets weirder and weirder as we dig in deeper.

re:
I deleted the IUSR and IWAM accounts

Bad move. That wasn't necessary, and creates a host of problems.

Did you recreate the IWAM account ?

You'll need to, and you'll have to reassign IWAM_KILLER's
new credentials to the processes which use IWAM_KILLER.

You'll also need to recreate the IUSR_KILLER account.

re:
Error 1: DCOM Error:

The IWAM account is the Built-in account for
Internet Information Services to start out of process applications.

If you deleted the IWAM account, it cannot run and can't start the IIS process.
The IWAM account is not created by IIS. It's created by your OS.

re:
Error 2: W3SVC Error:
'The server process could not be started because the configured identity
is incorrect. Check the username and password.

Again, the server process ( in this case ASP, not ASP.NET ), couldn't start
because the IWAM account doesn't exist, so the IIS process can't be started,
and the ASP process needs the IIS process to be able to run.

Resolution :

Recreate the IUSR_KILLER and IWAM_KILLER accounts.

Follow the instructions in this KB to assign "Logon as a batch job" rights :

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297519

That should get you up and running again
....and it may uncover new permission-related problems.

You might want, just in case, to read this KB article :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297989/EN-US/

In particular, read closely the "Method 1" and "Method 2" parts,
as well as the "Using Adsutil.vbs".

*Never* delete computer accounts unless you are very sure of whjat you're doing.

Juan,

Thanks for the links - I deleted them before reinstalling, so I didnt think
it would be a problem. I did what the instructions said with method 1 and
method 2, but it seems there is an issue with COM+, and I cannot get that
reinstalled because nothing that is suggested works. In desparation I did a
System Restore to a few days ago...not one of my best moves, though
certainly not on of my worst. IIS is now working without .NET 1.0 or 1.1
installed. However, when I attempt to install .NET, the installs fail. I
tried version 1.1 Redstributable to begin with, and that "seemed" to work.
On inspection in the v1.1... directory under Windows, I noticed there was
nothing in it after the install had "succeeded". So I then decided to
install dev studio 2003, knowing it had its own pre-requisites step whcih
will get my machine up and running with the frameworks. However, halfway
through the pre-requisites install of framework 1.1, it hangs. So I decided
to attempt to install 1.0 first - there was an error during this process
that mentioned v1.0.x.. wasnt found. I downloaded the redistributable 1.0
framework and attempted to install that. Unfortunately, even though 1.0 is
not in the Control Panel | Add Programs dialog, nor is there a 1.0 directory
on my machine, the redistributable thinks 1.0 is installed and bombs out.
This is basically where I am upto...getting somewhat stressed now.

This process fixed my problem. I had installed .net 1.1 and it had not
registered asp.net in IIS. Thanks.

At this point, given all the mishaps,
you'd to well to back up your essential data,
and nuke the partition/reinstall the OS.

Then a simple install of IIS and the .Net Framework
will get you up to working speed much faster than
trying to undo all the mishaps which have occurred so far .

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet.

Sincerely,

You are not the only one with this problem.

As it turns out, I was able to fix the problem in IIS manager by:
- Checking server extensions.
- Removing and Recreating the application that was acting up.
- Stopping and starting site.

After this, IIS was working again. Don't know wich part did the trick.

OK, found exactly wat caused it!

In IIS manager in the properties for the web site I had by mistake changed
"Local path" from:

C:\Inetpub\wwwroot
to
C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\

thats it!

Have you looked at the event logs? If IIS does not start there are usually
event logs that can point you in the right direction.

Hey pal !!

Try this,
1. Copy all your files to a sure address.
2. Erase the dirs that contain the web files.
3. Create the virtual dirs from the .NET interface again.
4. And you add the files to their respective dirs.

that's all.

Remember, K.I.S. (Keep It Simple)

Hi,

This is what you need to do.
1. Check if you have .Net framework 1.1 service pack 1 or not. If not upgrade.
2. One you install upgrade go to command prompt and do the fallowing:
.. Go to windows root directory
(WINNT from 2000) (WINDOWS for XP & 2003)
.. Got to ..\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322
.. type aspnet_regiis.exe -i
This will install this version of ASP.NET and update scriptmaps at the IIS
metabase root and for all scriptmaps below the root. Existing scriptmaps of
lower version are
upgraded to this version.

I've tried to resolve this issue in past several hours. Digging deeper
into the problem i've discovered that COM+ System Application Service
was corrupted, and that corruption was causing IIS not to run .aspx
pages. It also disabled Volume Shadow Copy and some other services.

By reinstalling COM+, all of my problems dissapeared.
You can find right procedure to do so on the following page:
http://robgarrett.com/Blogs/software/archive/2005/04/20/614.aspx

After you reinstall COM+, uninstall asp.net IIS support by executing:
aspnet_regiis.exe -u
Then uninstall IIS, and install it again.
Enable asp.net support by executing: aspnet_regiis.exe -i

This solved my problems, i hope it would help you
