Well, whether it's homework or questions for an exam, shouldn't be that much
different.

Ask yourself what you gain from being given the answers on a plate, compared
to with if you struggle to come up with the answers yourself.

Do you want to be a programmer, or do you just want to pass your exam?

IMHO, one of the primary skills of a programmer is to be able to find and
understand what's written in documentation, reference manuals, etc.

The questions you asked were to be seen as beginners questions (at least for
Java programmers), and maybe you should ask your questions in a more
appropriate newsgroup, e.g. comp.lang.java.help, instead of this.

Though we don't answer homework questions (or similar) there either, you'll
probably won't be as flamed as in this group.

I think Bjorn was trying to be helpful by recommending you post in
comp.lang.java.help instead of comp.lang.java.programmer because there's
less flaming in comp.lang.java.help. I don't think Bjorn was trying to be
mean to you.

Exactly, but I'm beginning to think that he's reading just like he writes...

To Hardik:

Here's some recommended reading;

http://tgos.org/newbie/rules.html

They are not the only guidelines for Usenet in existance, but most of them
are quite similar.

I believe the other suggestions I gave to Hardik falls under "Usenet
Guidelines" number 1 (follow the culture in the group) and 4 (check other
resources).

I would also like to add a suggestion to Hardik to use the "General
Guidelines" number 9 (about quoting).

You misunderstand. He is trying to help you. If people spoon feed
you, you will learn nothing. You will have gone through the motions,
but come out the end without increased skill.

It is a judgment call the best degree of help to give, but in general,
the degree that serves you best will make you somewhat uncomfortable,
same as weight lifting. You won't build muscles lifting Styrofoam or
having someone else lift weights for you.

Even if hardik is being too tough, your childish response is turning
off other slightly softer teachers. Keep that up and you may find no
one willing to even talk to you.

You seem to think the universe OWES you answers to your questions.
That attitude is the fastest way to ensure you won't get them.

People here dedicate many hours each week to helping newbies. They
don't have to do that. Nobody pays them too. They are not here just
to tantalise you. Notice that other newbies ARE getting answers and
plenty of help. If you are curious why they are and you are not, see:

"fucking asshole" suggests he is angry and feels hard done by.

an aside, should that not read "fucked asshole"?

Words used as expletives should not be taken very abstractly. To me,
"fucking" doesn't provide any additional info, but just emphasizes the rest,
i.e. "Not only are you an asshole, but you're a fucking asshole." "fucked",
on the other hand, means to me that the person being described is in deep
trouble and can be used as a threat, e.g. "You're fucked now, asshole".

I couldn't go far enough back to find his original problem. My news
archive makes it look like he *opened* with "fucking asshole"

"How to win friends and influence people" by Hardik.
A nice message at the start of the thread, then it descends into this,
and for no reason. Bjorn wasn't being an ass, but you are doing a damn
good impression! Don't be surprised if the replies to your questions
drop off.

hey friends

i think u r all are thinking too much about this topic. i
think i need to clear this topic right now, first of all my complete
introduction i am college student and i have already learn C,Data
Structures, Vb, Ai, Algorithms & Flowcharts, Operating Systems and
Unix, Computer Graphics and Multimedia, Software Engineering, Computer
Communication Networks, Database management system (Oracle), Internet
Technology and Web Development and i have created projects in php as
well as in vb and recently i started my research in C++ and java and
..net technology's so as a starter i ask questions to programmer group
bcz actually i never know that there is a help group also available in
java, and all of sudden people tell me that i should ask question in
help group. ok i fine i also tell sorry about that steel some people
wants to irritate me and mails at my mail address so i was not happy
and i show my unhappines to those people. person who mail me was grag .
and bjorn was also the person who replied me vary badly tell me is this
fair call that they send me mails and use very bad words for me steel
i dont say i say sorry and yet they irritate me not in public post but
by mailing me so i was very unhappy about and i am not like those guys
i send my message in public post.

now another thing that i have notice is they say do it by yourself.ok
now for your surprize i have created some of the apache function for
security. and another think if creators of apache or java or anyother
language people think like greg or Bjorn then we will never have java
or php or apache or may be linux. just think java is never used bcz
some persons dont wants to tell abt it.its the developers of java or
php or anyother open source language person who helped us.

Sorry about the misunderstanding then. I guess from your perspective,
you're getting these private e-mails that seem to be insulting you, and you
feel its unhonorable to do this via private e-mail or something, so you
respond to them in public posts. But from my perspective, I don't see these
private e-mails. All I see are the public posts. So if I see a message where
all of a sudden you get angry and start insulting people, and I don't see
why you're doing this, it makes it look like you're just an angry and mean
person.

If someone e-mails you privately, and you don't like what they're
saying, just ignore their e-mails. It takes them effort to actually write
the e-mails, while it'll take you very little energy to click the "delete"
button, so it's a losing game for them.
now another thing that i have notice is they say do it by yourself.ok
now for your surprize i have created some of the apache function for
security. and another think if creators of apache or java or anyother

I don't know what the private e-mails may have said, but in the public
post Bjorn said in which he told you to "do it yourself", what he means is
try to solve the problem yourself, but if you get stuck, you can ask for
help (either in here, comp.lang.java.programmer, or in comp.lang.java.help).
If we just solve the problem for you, you can see the solution, but you
don't know how we got the solution, and so next time you see a similar
problem, you won't be able to solve it.

What usually happens in these forums is you would post your problem, and
then post all your ideas for how to solve that problem, and then put a
question at the end asking about the parts where you're stuck. Then other
people will read your ideas, and maybe they'll point out mistakes you made,
or give you hints on the parts where you are stuck.

If you feel there's too much aggression in both the
comp.lang.java.programmer and comp.lang.java.help group, you might want to
take a break, and not go to the groups for a few days until things settle
down, and try again.
