If you have control on the machine like you know which OS it has, the
variations are pretty straighfreward.
Windows 2000 = IIS 5.0
Windows XP Pro = IIS 5.1
Windows Server 2003 = IIS 6.0
Like was said, there's also a server variable which reveals the software.
