Including fonts ?

If I use a particular font for parts of my webpage, is it possible to
"embed" the font so it loads on the viewer's machine ?

Not reliably, no.

Not reliably; see this as one of the 'limitations' that web has over
print. You can also see it as a challenge, like many of the really good
web designers out there.

The only reliable way is to make it an image.

Yes, of course you can.

With one caveat.

The following approach only works for users of MS Internet Explorer (but
then again -- that's probably 90-95% of your audience). Other users will
simply see the alternative text that you suggest in your 'font-family'
list (or their own preferred font).

Go here to read about and download the WEFT program:
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/web/embedding/weft3/default.htm

Here's an example of an embedded font in use:

http://www.gododdin.demon.co.uk/ng/fonttest.htm
(which should look like http://www.gododdin.demon.co.uk/ng/FONTS.JPG )

There is obviously an overhead for the font file -- but this can be
generated as a fairly selective subset and will reduce size to a
minimum.

regards.

Based on the op's question, I seriously doubt this is an issue with
this site ;-}

And just what leads you to that particular conclusion?

I can envisage a person who has just invented the next Better Mouse Trap and
wants everybody in the world to know about it and so wants the site listed
in every search engine that can bot it, including google. However, said
person doesn't know much about HTML which is why said person is here asking
the question.

You are presupposing.

if they have it enabled and if the firewall doesn't filter it out

But then, nothing on the web will ever work on everyone's computer
anyway so the developers have to make choices.

This is so - just like Javascript (only I guess fewer people consider
disabling download fonts).

Still, if they do, they will simply default to the OP's list of
suggested fonts or they'll use their own preferred one.

2 and a half years reading questions in this forum and watching the
resulting web pages.

I envision someone new to HTML that thinks their font "makes" the
entire site.
You are presupposing.

As we all are.

My browser always asks if I want to download new fonts, and I always say
"no".

And as I said in, errr... alt.html.tags I think, when you do a minimal
install of Internet Explorer, it doesn't come with the fancy
font-downloading stuff. (And I'd wager than many IT departments do minimal
installs to save time -- I know I do. Though -- excitement! -- I have
managed to persuade my boss that we should migrate to Firefox as the
standard browser at work.)

And those doing a 'standard' installation will get it installed ... and
most over-the-counter PCs will come with it installed.

Well so much for seeing the web....
