J2EE vs. PHP

L

Luca

I am not a programmer but I do work in the ICT sector.

I read somewhere that J2EE would be "dying" and that PHP would be
taking its place soon...
Is this complete crap or does it have some real base ?

If anywhere, you should probably ask this in the advocacy groups. This
newsgroup is more for programming questions that tech industry sector
analysis.

IM(NS)HO, it's bogus. J2EE is a better choice for large, extremely
busy sites. If offers scalablity and other advantages that PHP, good
as it is, doesn't.

That's not to knock PHP, it's very good stuff. But I don't think you'd
run something like Amazon.com on PHP. But you would use J2EE for
something that large.

Luca, J2EE and PHP each have their stengths and weakneses. They can
each be "better" than the other depending on the problem domain. There
are not very many areas where they really compete (other than forums
and newsgroups) but, try to make them compete and the flame wars will
definitely start.
Many are arguing that PHP will get replaced with Ruby on Rails but, who
knows (90% of predictions are wrong anyway).

Also consider that the lead developer of PHP has recently quit

I'm curious about why you've asked the question. If you are managing
developers, and have a new project coming up, I'd recommend that you
consult the team who will be doing the development.
