JNI/Invoke JVM/Set Memory

I am invoking the JVM from a C++ application. When I run my application
under heavy stress I get a java.lang.outofmemory error. Is there a way to
set the options when invoking the JVM to set the memory
allocation(ala -xmsXXXm from the command line)?
