Membership and SharePoint?

I have been unable to find out if SharePoint next version (2007?) will
support the ASP.NET Membership features (MembershipProvider, RoleProvider,
etc.).

Will SharePoint work with this technology and as such let you use an
authentication and authorization technology different from AD?
