OT: completely remove VC++ 6? Or repair $PATH

P

I tried VC++ Express, discoveredd it does not do MFC and decided to use
my VC6.

It was failing to compile anything so i removed and reinstalled several
times. Then removed VC++ Express. VC6 still dead. It can edit but
cannot compile and gives no error message at all.
From command line I get:

"cl.exe failed to find mspdb60.dll" even though its exactly where its
supposed to be.

My guess is that the $PATH is utterly messed up by my reinstalls or
there is some setting in registry thats duplicated.

I've googled a bit and finding that I can't do anything. I try
switching user and it has same problems.

Anyone got a useful suggestion?

Do you think that putting "OT:" in the Subject line will somehow improve the
odds this question gets a good answer here?

You will still get a better answer on a Microsoft newsgroup, possibly
*ide_general.

Last post was on June 5. Guess I'd better start using a forum at ms.com

I wanted to get some meat, but the butcher shop was closed, so I went to
the greengrocers instead, and was surprised when they told me they
didn't carry meat.

Same argument.

More likely: "They said the meat they had, I wouldn't want!"

No. More like I wanted legal advice, the barrister said it was not his
specialised area and I was left wondering whether to ask the village
idiot.

You underestimate the difference in quality between Usenet and the
forums. False modesty on your part ;-)

BTW, a fifth reinstall removing every trace of VS2005 from my system
fixed VC++6. How or why I don't know but for now I am grateful for
small mercies.

Topicality is a funny thing.

If you ask an on-topic question here, some of the best C++ heads in the
world will _compete_ with each other to provide the best answer. If the
village idiot answers too, the others will generally take care of me.

I don't know what you mean by "the forums". All these forums rely on a crew
of regulars, and on-topic questions.
