yes but don't use tables for layout. use CSS

using active and visited, but I don't see how to do it because you have
to change the other table as well as the one you click on.

I was quite surprised about the lack of Mozilla support, although there is
no doubt some strange hack that could fix it.

Might be possible with ":hover"? Simply set both to have 'z-index:1'
initially and then set table:hover { z-index: 2; }

Good one. Part 1 works in IE6 but not 2 and 3.

Have now done some pure CSS versions (although with slightly different
behaviour!)

No joy in Gecko (Moz, Netscape 6+) still. Nor Trident (IE/Win). Probably

div:hover works for geckos

But table:hover doesn't (for whatever reason). And neither does
table:active.

Using Moz 1.4 here.
