Pulling plug on network versus RMI

Basically, I have a server that performs some various tasks over RMI from
requesting clients. If I unplug this server, the client hang forever the
next
time they request something from it.

I've surfed around for some good ideas, but haven't really zoned in on one
that made sense to me.

Any good solution to this situation?
