REQ: Why can't I edit HTML?

Y

young

I am using Netscape v7.1 in W98SE, and have a test page I coded which
executes just fine.

Now I want to change a few things, so with the page displayed, I
selected view>page source. The HTML code shows okay but I can't edit
it.

Why?

What do I do to allow editing?

Thanks

Let's be clear about this :~)

Are you selecting view source from your site on a server on the www and
trying to edit it from there? as that's not possible *unless* you are
trying to do it via your ftp program.

If you are doing it from the files on your local drive it *will* work ok,
BUT then you have to upload the AMENDED file and over-write the existing
one using your ftp program.

Is that any help or did I mis-read your post :~)

Right. View source is /view/ source, not edit source. Save it, then edit it.

Okay let me try to explain -

My test html file is called 1.hrm and it resides on c drive at c:\1.
When I double click on it, Netscape comes up, showing the page.
I select view>page source to display the HTML source-code.
It shows it.
I can't edit it.

I am using Netscape v7.1

Thanks

Open the HTML file in your editor like you did when you created it.
Viewing the source is not going to allow you to edit it, especially if you
are doing so in Netscape as it opens up in its own source viewer, not a
text editor.

Surely editing in 'notepad' can't be worse than editing from a Netscape
browser, or am I missing something :~)

As mentioned previously, NN7 opens the source in its own non-editing
display.

If you're using Windows, use Explorer to locate the file on your hard disk,
right click on the file and the context-menu will give you options. Choose
"Open with > Notepad" - if Notepad isn't on the list, select "Open with >
Choose program..." and choose Notepad.

it ;)

because netscape uses a source code viewer, you need to define the default
viewer to be notepad

Are you saying that Netscape allows you to set a 'default viewer'?
If so, where?

Or did you mean to just associate the suffix 'htm' with something else
such as Notepad?

Thanks

AFAIK, that's not possible.

It would be a bad idea to associate the extension .htm(l) with anything
other than a browser since you'll probably want web pages to open in a web
browser by default.

Instead of "viewing" source, press CTRL-E to EDIT source.
