Sun.com down?

I can't even ping sun.com. Is this a local problem or is Sun itself
down. Not that great an advertisement if it is.

java.sun.com is running again now, but slowly.
sun.com is now working normally.

You can't ping ibm.com, microsoft.com or amazon.com either. They have
all decided it is a security risk and its absence is unlikely to cause
a loss of business.

But you can ping google.com and oracle.com, which is handy for
verifying connectivity.

That's correct. You can't ping sun even when it is up. However, in
general there are three levels of downness.

1. can't do DNS
2. can't ping
3. can't access the web server.

(1) usually means big trouble -- gone out of business.

(3) is often temporary. They are just restarting the server womb for
some reason.
