What is google?

I am serious. As I understand, it is just a search engine.
And with software being what it is, why not just create a new search
engine?

You might say: "but google has amassed a data base of established
sites." To which I would say: "sites: here today, gone tomorrow."

I really would like to know why google is worth so much money?
Is it just people's habit of going to google.com?

Google is worthy a lot of money due to their adverts. Almost every site
has 'Google ads' on every page. And of course that habit you talk about.
Building a new search engine wouldn't help that much because everybody
uses Google already!

To let the world use your search engine, it has to be great. And then I
mean really great. Things like delivering exactly that site you were
searching for. If someone is going to write a new search engine, I am
willing to help ;)

Totally off-topic for this group. :)

When Google was founded, it used a unique algorithm that was more
effective than the popular search engines at the time (Yahoo, Lycos,
etc.). If you searched for "fish," the popular search engines would
give you a list of web pages containing the word "fish," sorted more or
less according to the number of times the word "fish" appeared on each
page. Google, however, ranked the pages according to the number of
links it found to them from elsewhere, which in turn has a good
correlation with how useful other people had already found the site.

Suppose you sell bicycles on line, and you want your page to come up
near the top of the list when people search for "bicycle," or "bike," or
"ten-speed," or any other bicycle-related term. You can get to the top
of a naive search engine's result list by including tons of
bicycle-related words on your site. (You still see web pages sometimes
with lots of seemingly random words somewhere in their HTML, all related
to topic X.) To get to the top of Google's list, though, you have to
get other people to link to your site, which generally means you have to
offer something they find useful.
