why openjms uses database configuration

I am new to openjms http://openjms.sourceforge.net/. When i go throgth
the documentation of openjms they mention configuration for JDBC and
Database. Can any tell why do we need such configuration.

Persistence using JDBC

The messages in queue has to be persisted to be able to
keep the message even if the system crashes the message queue system
has to write it to disk. The two common approaches are: database
and file. OpenJMS uses a database.
