Firefox/Netscape Media Player

Just recently bought an HP Pavilion zd8000 notebook and I'm having
problems with Firefox and Netscape not playing background sound (MIDI
format).

I have WMP, QuickTime, and Real Player installed, but when I open a page
(when using Firefox or Netscape) with a MIDI background sound I get the
notice that additional plugins are required. I follow the links and I
end up at the Apple QuickTime download page. But I already have it
installed.

Do I need to do something with these two browsers to activate the
players ?

The MIDI background sound does play when I use Explorer and Opera. And
I'm using the embed tag for the background sound.

Also, these same pages when viewed with an older desk top using Firefox
and Netscape do play the background sound, with the same players I
mentioned above installed.

Thanks for any help.

Later, Art.

Well duh me.

I never thought about that, and it's obviously the obvious thing to do.

Thanks for the reply and referral.

Happy New Year.

There have been issues with Firefox for playing some sound and other
formats, and not just midis. You will find some information at Firefox
support at Mozilla. In my case, flash suddenly quit working on Firefox,
as well as another browser or two, and you got the QT plugin message
that you describe. To make a long story short, Firefox had 3 QT plugin
files installed, 2 of which had not been removed during previous
upgrades. Removing the 2 extra QT plugin files and reinstalling flash
cleared up the problem. I have the WMP made the primary player for
midi. When I click on the URL of a midi file online, Firefox then asks
me if I want to play the midi using the default WMP for midi, or if I
want to download the midi. I believe you may be able to set to play the
midi only instead of asking what you want to do. Also, some players
will allow you to call up the player and then enter a URL in a menu
option. If you select a player that will play a midi, be it the default
player or not, this will usually make the midi play. However sometimes
a sound file will play when you go to the url for it directly, but not
when it is embedded in a page. In that case there may be other issues
that perhaps are discussed in the Mozilla-Firefox groups and help
information.

Thanks jr.

I'll go the support route as you and kchayka have recommended.

I tried looking for settings with Firefox and Netscape for setting the
default player, but couldn't find anything. I'll look again.

Hi Art. You will need to go to each player you have and set the file
types for which you want it to play. You can have conflicts if you
check to play the same file type on more than one player. If you have
one of the most recent Real players, it has an advanced menu to allow
setting it, but moreover this menu tells you what other player may be
set as the default player for a file type Real also will play. If worst
comes to worst, a clean install of Firefox might help, rather than an
install over an old version of Firefox. You have to be very careful
here though, as you could lose all of your saved information on
Firefox. Again, since there are so many possible causes of the sort of
problem you describe, you may need to go to one of the Firefox/Mozilla
discussion groups for help.

I would check your plugins and see if they are installed and enabled
'about:plugins' in address bar
