image file toolkit

Hi;

Can anyone recomend a good open source toolkit that can read in
various bitmap formats (tif, bmp, etc.) and then create an Image
object and/or convert them to png?

Please correct me if I'm wrong but the imagemagick engine is written
in c and therefore is not portable.

1.4 most can be done without ever leaving the Java runtime library.
