Any do TopCoder?

You all should check out topcoder.com. It's pretty cool stuff - the
algorithm competitions are addictive. Java is one of the supported
languages in the competition. If you're decent, you may get a job.
It's not perfect - but very cool anyway.

Anyone else compete there?

Used to, until someone using another machine on my LAN pulled my
solutions from an NFS drive and submitted them under a different
name. A**hole got me barred.
But certainly a lot of fun and very challenging. Even educational
as you can see the different approaches taken by programmers. One
of the best ways of learning, IMHO.

Okay, this sounded intriguing and I tried it out this morning. It
certainly seems like a fun way to spend an otherwise dull Saturday
morning. It certainly lacks the casual human atmosphere from my fond
memories from the POTM contest, though.

Ah well, back to the far less interesting task of debugging Postgres
JDBC drivers. :)

I have. I used to work for the owner, jack Hughes, when he use to own a
consulting firm. Very intelligent guy. I started playing back when they
offered cash awards in the tournaments.

The tournaments require a strong command of the language and the ability to
quickly think on your feet. There's usually a trick to some of the
solutions. I would recommend reviewing and attempting many of the original
problem from previous tournaments.

I'm sure he's doing quite well. If you want to sharpen your skill I'd
suggest trying it out, unless your chicken.

Is that something it's possible to do without actually registering ? I looked
for "old" problems but wasn't able to find anything.

I'm automatically averse to anything that requires me to register just in order
to discover whether it was *worth* registering ;-)
