ASP 2 and dropdown

Is there a way to bind a dropdownlist on a form view and avoid the the error
when the value comming from data is not found on the dataobject attached to
the dropdownlist?

From your description, my understanding is you want to bind a dropdownlist
control in the formview control. If I have misunderstood anything, please
let me know.

As far as I know, there is a sample from Scott's blog. This demonstrates

In addition, I'm not very clear about the statement as below:
