My rationale is that not everyone uses decent servers, and that some
of those may have been misled into thinking the page to be useful
to C programmers.

While exposing spam those of us who do use a decent server (partly to
get the benefit of spam filters)? I've seen a few of these recently in
more than one group, all exposed by you replying to them.

Please don't!

Since the original article claimed to be specifically about C,
it was reasonable to assume that it was not spam (i.e., an article
cross-posted or multi-posted to excessively many newsgroups), and
I'm mildly but pleasantly surprised to see that the server I use
did drop it.

(Note: By saying it wasn't necessarily spam, I don't suggest that it
was appropriate.)

I second Ian's request...
If you can't resist and have to reply to such posts, just make sure you're
at least the 2nd responder.

I can resist just fine. I can also see that responding to spam,
whilst *usually* a bad idea, is not *always* a bad idea. Can't you?

Then just make your reply the 2nd.
For the record, I see probably about 30 or 40 spam posts a day in
comp.lang.c.

You need a better news server then. I see 3 or 4 per day.
The percentage of spam posts I respond to is
vanishingly small, and I never respond to a spam post without a
good reason for doing so.

I don't think there are good reasons to respont to spam, esp. not if that
response reveals the spam post to those who's news server gratefully
filtered it.

I respectfully disagree.

C'est la vie. Bear in mind that I do *not* reply to the vast
majority of the spam posts I see.

Please bear in mind that I don't see the vast majority of spam posts you do
not reply to, the vast majority of the ones I see are via your responses.
