can't add requiredFields validator to fields inside <asp:table>?

i've got a couple of controls within an asp:table and a couple outside. when
i add a requiredField validator, it looks like i'm only able to see the
controls outside the asp:table within the 'ControlToValidate' dropdown. is
this right or am i missing something?
