Call for Participation

OMG's First Annual Software-Based Communications (SBC) Workshop:
From Mobile to Agile Communications
http://www.omg.org/news/meetings/SBC2004/call.htm

September 13-16, 2004 Washington, DC USA

Introduction

The OMG originally undertook standardization efforts related to
software-based communication technology with a focus on military
software-defined radio (SDR). These initial OMG efforts were largely
driven by early adoption in military radios, specifically the JTRS
program and its specification of the Software Communication
Architecture (SCA) to support waveform portability and
interoperability. However, software radio technology has matured over
the recent years, with applicability growing to address a wide range
of application areas including automotive, public safety, global
tracking, consumer electronics and cellular network infrastructure.
Building upon this SDR foundation, OMG is advancing to a broader
vision encompassing these new applications. Learning from
implementation efforts and promoting the sharing of experience
reports, case studies and best practices, the members of OMG's
Software-Based Communications Domain Task Force now hold a view of a
wider scope beyond software radio, or telecommunications, including
real-time embedded applications, component-based modeling in general
and how OMG's
Model Driven Architecture (MDA(r)) can be applied to this field to
advance model-driven communication application and system development.

Hosted by the OMG and sponsored by PrismTech, this September summit
will explore concepts related to software-based communications, from
today's military SDR programs to future deployments in commercial
wireless networks and consumer devices. For example, expected workshop
topics will include technical and business issues and solutions
related to the architecture, design, and implementation of SBC systems
across a range of processing platforms. The Workshop is open to all
with an interest in, and understanding of the topic of software-based
communications. Workshop participants will include representatives of
technology providers, implementers (architects, modelers, developers,
systems integrators), standards bodies, and large end-user
organizations (e.g., government agencies.) Practitioners with relevant
experience are invited to come and share their experiences with each
other and their vendor community.

Workshop Focus and Format
The four-day program will address technologies, methodologies, tools
and standards related to SBC. In addition, the Workshop will offer
case studies and user experiences. While research topics are not
excluded, the emphasis, as with all OMG activity, is on real-world
experience.

Workshop format follows a pattern of half day tutorials followed by a
combination of sessions and panels. Normally, sessions include three
or more 30-minute presentations followed by Q&A directed to all of the
presenters. 90-minute panels provide invited speakers with an
opportunity to make a
short position statement, after which the floor is open to general Q&A
from the audience. A Demonstration Area is provided to showcase
commercial offerings supporting this technology.

Call For Proposals
The SBC Workshop Program Committee is seeking proposals for
presentations, panels or tutorials addressing, but not limited to, any
of the following topics:

- Patterns and design for communications hardware/software
- Applying MDA to Software-based Communications
- Software Frameworks, Architectures, Platforms and PSMs
- Experience reports, case studies and best practices
- E.g., Military radio (JTRS, SCA), global tracking systems,
automotive, reconfigurable cellular basestations
- Experiences related to building function systems
- Common application components
- Performance issues and processing platform choices
- PIM-to-PSM design transformation issues associated with deployment
platforms
- Security issues and implementation approaches
- Products and Tools
- SBC Standards
- Realtime modeling
- Realtime component-based architectures
- Hardware / software co-design
- Synergy between the underlying physical architecture and the
software architecture on the context of design impacts and constraints
- Project Management
- SBC State of the Art
- Future Directions

Instructions
Interested individuals or organizations are invited to submit a brief
abstract of the presentation or position paper they are proposing for
a Workshop session, tutorial or panel along with proposed duration and
a brief personal biography via web form found at
http://www.omg.org/abstracts
Abstracts should be no longer than 600 words in length. Only 3
abstracts per individual will be accepted. Biographies should be no
longer than 100 words. The Program Committee will need schedule
flexibility, so please keep in mind that a proposal may be accepted,
but not granted the full time proposed.

No advertisements, please! While referencing commercial products to
reinforce a premise or case study is quite acceptable, the Program
Committee will not accept proposals that are deemed "product pitches."

Note for panel proposals: Please describe the topic and nominate a
moderator and panelists, by name or by role (e.g. "A tool vendor", "an
OMG AB member"), and time required.

About The OMG
The Object Management Group (OMG) is an international, open
membership, not-for-profit computer industry standards consortium. OMG
member companies write, adopt, and maintain its standards following a
mature, open process. OMG's standards implement the Model Driven
Architecture® (MDA®), maximizing ROI through a full-lifecycle approach
to enterprise integration that covers multiple operating systems,
programming languages, middleware and networking infrastructures, and
software development environments. OMG's standards include: UML®
(Unified Modeling Language™); CORBA® (Common Object Request Broker
Architecture); CWM™ (Common Warehouse Metamodel); and
industry-specific standards for dozens of vertical markets. OMG has
offices at 250 First Ave., Suite 100, Needham, MA 02494 USA.
