Auto completion is gods gift to programmers. I can't believe that someone
with serious intentions of developing java code quickly and efficiently
would think differently.

I don't. I'm using it all the time myself. I did specifically say: `to
learn the ropes'.
It stunning how programmers tends to love stone age
methods and how they tend bo be very reactionary.

This thread was about understanding how something works and why
something `unexpected' happened. I'm not advocating doing everything by
hand in everyday work. My point is simply, if you've never done it by hand
at all, sooner or later you'll be baffled by your tools, because you don't
know what's going on under the hood.

Oh sorry, I forgot that we have the year 1975 soon, and of course I must
learn to use the very modern command line tool. I will also stop using
IntelliJ and use notepad as editor.

I rather read the AntBuild manual than use a hopeless cmd window.

You did not understand my point. Maybe this FAQ puts it better (different
tool, same point):

I will
claim that using cmd windows will hinder understanding and fast development.

Fast development, yes (well, the vi and emcas people will disagree about this
as well), but the part about understanding is very, very wrong. At least
if we're talking about understandng how things WORK as opposed to understanding
how to USE them. And a programmer very much needs to understand how things
work, otherwise he's not a programmer at all.

Thank you. I happy to announce that my "private problem" has speeded up my
programming with 100% or more.

And it has thus far taken 20 posts in this thread that should have
either not ocurred, or been sorted within 3-4 posts. Go figure.

Using command line tools has always been boring and difficult. Doing
difficult and boring stuff will not cause you to go deeper into the problems
to get understanding, i e you will lose interest in the subject.

Please don't go out and work as a teacher. You're pupils would learn nothing
because you have a 19th century view of how man learns a subject.

And my friends wonder why I regret my 5 years of masters studies in computer
science ...

Most of the replies are flames and off topic. Go figure.

Tell 'em it is because the only thing you gained from it was the
ability to cut in to usenet conversations two days late to whine
about the advice provided by others. That should clear it up.

Well, once again we see why nobody wants to study computer science.

My mother told me to study to be a doctor ... man, do I regret my computer
science studies. 5 years of know it all-jerks and no girls ...
