Controlling Dataprobe Thru Dial-Up

I have a dialup connection from my PC to Dataprobe; I would like to accomplish the following, without using Hyperterminal:

1) Open the COM1 of the Dataprobe
2) Have a pop up menu that would do the following:
a) Switch to Side A
b) Switch to Side B
3) Get the status of the dataprobe
4) exit from the menu

Please recommend a sample program that would help me accomplish the above.
