database roles

is it possible in asp.net to check what database role a user is part of?

Which version of SQL Server are you using?

One way is to execute a stored procedure, query the syslogins table and
return the roles.

I am not sure if there is any simpler way than this.

You can also use the SQL-DMO objects available in .NET code. Check out
the IsMember method of the User class.
