Drop down form element with small size

Is it possible to make a drop down form element in a smaller size than
normal? How can I do this.

In CSS:

select { font-size: 75%; }

But don't do it. The crystal ball tells that you are actually trying to
set up a navigational drop down menu. The page

explains why that's not a good idea (and reducing font size makes it even
worse).
