element.children.length v/s element.childNodes.length

Are these equiv? Both attributes exist in ie6, but ff does not have
element.children.length defined

For objects in both browsers, in which element.childNodes.length
report, say 8

IE element.children.length == 8, FF element.children.length == not
defined.

Can I replace code using element.children.length with use
element.childNodes.length?

FF 3.5 will have a children property on element nodes:
