It depends on the OS.

I know for windows for fixing a damaged MBR windows just rewrites it. fdisk
c: /mbr would rewrite the master boot record.

As to repaired damaged data on the hard drive there are various means,
norton utilites uses a number of them.

However, discussion of this is really not on topic for this newsgroup. I
would suggest you try maybe comp.programming or a group dedicated to the OS
in quesion.
