How does a GC compute the root set?

Hi,

How does a garbage collector compute the root set? By scanning the
entire static and stack segments of a program. Or using the symbol
table generated by the compiler? (If the question is irrelevant here,
please excuse me).

While there are known (and even popular) implementations of GC in C++,
since you're asking a non-language question, you might consider some
other newsgroup, like comp.programming.
