How to set users download directory?

L

Lachlan Gemmell

Hello there,

I'd like to set the users default download folder on their PC to a certain
location (if it exists). The users will be downloading documents and we want
to try to minimise the chances of them being littered all over their PCs.

Any suggestions? I don't want to create directories on their PCs just make
them the default directory when the download dialogue appears.

Regards,

Lachlan

None, except to give up.
I don't want to create directories on their PCs just make

That could, almost, be harmless. But then again, clicking on a
linke to download a file called "start.exe" and not noticing that
the download directory is not the usual one, but instead C:\windows\
could be ... interesting.

Don't mess with people's defaults. It's their defaults, not yours.

Would you be able to set the old default directory back afterwards?
Would you then know the directory name? Could you send it to your
server?

The users are intranet users and it's in their interests for these documents
from our intranet site to go to a standard location on their hard drive.
That's the reasoning behind it, in case you're holding out on a technique to
do this.

You might try looking into an ActiveX object. Javascript has no resource
(other than the ability to script an ActiveX) to change the download
destination.
