The idea is to drink enough so you don't care. Don't forget the mythos
about the dedicated but unemployed educator who struggles in vain against
all odds, can't get nobody to believe him, and finally even begins to
doubt himself until everything comes out all right after an alcoholic
binge or binges, et al.
