Is there a way to control Windows Media Player with ruby?

I *think* I've seen something that suggests it can be
done with OLE, but I haven't been able to find any
documentation...

Check out this article by Brian Marick.

He's testing Word using COM and Win32OLE. Perhaps you can apply these
ideas to controlling WMP.
