Can anyone suggest me any good book for java for my upcoming
interviews??
thx

I'm assuming that you are looking for your first programming position, is
that correct? You might want to search out some of the example exams for
the Sun Certified Java Programmer exam (assuming you haven't already taken
it). These are quite useful for detecting gaps in your knowledge of some
of the finer points.

Beyond that, read some of the Java websites (such as java.net and
theserverside.com) and blogs (see javablogs.com for links) to make sure
you are up-to-date with what is going on in the world of Java.

As for books:

1). Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software (Erich
Gamma et. al)
Not a Java book, but probably more useful for making sure you are familiar
with the standard patterns and terminology. An alternative to this would
be the Head First Design Patterns book. I haven't read it but it is more
recent and probably less dry. Either way, it will help you to
"talk-the-talk" when it comes to OO design.

2). Effective Java (Joshua Bloch)
Out-of-date but still indispensible. For a more recent read check out
Java Puzzlers (Joshua Bloch and Neal Gafter). It has a slightly different
approach but covers a lot of the stuff that has become relevant since the
first book was published.
