Java One?

Have you been there this edition? What impressed you?

I was at the first one. I have not had the bucks to go back since. I
had a ball though most of the time I was manning a booth to sell
Athena Integer, a multithreaded, multiuser spreadsheet engine and
component that handled doubles just fine.

What was most fun was playing with the Solaris workstations. They had
dozens of them you could just experiment with. Back then I had never
seen anything so smooth in graphics. Now my own PC is no slouch.

The other thing that impressed me were the Javacards -- tiny jvms that
lived on a credit card. They had schemes to prevent apps from
interfering with each other.

The hit of the conference were the Javarings, a ring that could record
your coffee preferences. You would just wave it over a reader to get
the coffee you wanted.

Of course I got to see the famous people of the time, Gosling, Joy,
Van Der Linden. I got to meet Joy later at the Colorado software
conference. I just love that guy. He is intelligent, witty, and
deeply cares about software beauty.

Now you know why people consider most Sun workstations serious computer
gear and why Sun has a group of loyal followers. I only wish the
hardware wouldn't be so expensive.
