Latest Ruby on older RedHat Linux

Hi folks,

Nuby here - another ex Java stooge;-)

I have Ruby 1.6 on a production box running RetHad Linux 9 and I cannot
upgrade the OS now but I wish to run r1.8 and Rails.

What is the easiest and quickest way?:-
1. Should I just build from source - I have gcc version 3.2.2?
2. Use a prebuild binary, found via http://rpmfind.net? But the r1.8
binaries are for Fedora, RedHat Enterprise, SuSE .. - will these
binaries work on my Linux?
3. Just be happy with r1.6?

Is this the best place to ask?

Thank you in advance
Cheers.

I find that building from source, as a general rule makes my ruby
using experience much happier in the long run.
