LibXML "self contains no data"

Hello,

It might be a silly question, but I'been stuck
on it for many hours: can anyone tell me what it means
when LibXML outputs «self contains no data» as an error message?

It is thrown when I call a method on an object.
The object seems to exist (otherwise, the method would die).
