migrating to AMD Athlon64

Mike

I have a Web site that runs on Linux, Apache, Tomcat with a lot of
intensive JSP read/writes to MYSQL. The system uses a single 200MZ
pentium chip.

I would like to someday migrate to AMD's 64 bit chip like the AMD
Athlon64 FX-51.

Are there linux OS(s) that support the architecture?
Are there or will there soon be virtual machines that support it?
Would I have to alter my JSP code?

Would Apache, Tomcat and MYSQL have come out with versions that
support it in order for me to make full use of 64-bit computing?

Anyone now of Web sites that outline this type of migration?

I realize these questions go far beyond java but I don't know where
else to ask.

there was an announcement some time back that AMD and Sun were going
to support there Opteron with a 64 bit Java. I don't know about the
OS though.

SuSE Enterprise Server 8 (SLES8) supports AMD64, and so will the later
versions of SuSE Desktop and Standard Server, and Red Hat when it gets
its arse in gear. I'm assuming that debian will have it in the works as
well.

Another option would be to switch to OS X; G5s are 64 bit chips.

But why are you trying to do this ? If your site works fine on a
200 mhz pentium, there's no reason to switch to a 64 bit system
anytime soon. A low-end 32 bit system today is still 10-30x faster
than your current setup. And, if you really need more performance than
that, you're almost definitely better off getting a multiprocessor box,
a RAID array, and more memory, than going 64 bit. You've got a long,
long way to go before you exhaust the 32 bit architecture.

The geographical center of Boston is in Roxbury. Due north of the
center we find the South End. This is not to be confused with South
Boston which lies directly east from the South End. North of the South
End is East Boston and southwest of East Boston is the North End.
