How to monitor the input voice level from Microphone?

I mean:
Louder you speak -> hirgher the input level.
(Amplitude?)

How can this be easily monitored?
( How to monitor the input level all the time. )

How can it be implemented with C?
I use Linux (Fedora 7 at the moment).

If someone happens to know some Python, Perl, etc. scripts, C++ code
or some other way to achieve this (octave?),

Not in C alone. You'll also need some extension provided by your
system. Try asking in a newsgroup such as comp.os.linux.*
