I am new to HTML and have a simple site with a link that goes to another web
site.
My link opens the new site in the same window.

I am trying to figure out how to make it open a new window.

Any advice is appreciated.

Hi

This is rarely thought to be a good thing to do, although it is done
very frequently.

It's easily accomplished.

Just put target="_blank" in the link tag like so:

<a href="http://www.patrickjames.me.uk" target="_blank">Link Text</a>

The reason people feel it's not a good idea is that it is a nuisance
for when browsing the web to have pages open in new windows. After all
if the person browsing the web wants to open the page in a new window
they can choose to do that themselves.

If it is to be done then I think it is polite to let the person know
that the link will open page in new window.

That's a good thing. Let your visitors decide for themselves. (Topic oft
discussed in these newsgroups.)
I am trying to figure out how to make it open a new window.

Rather than create a situation where you "break their Back button" so
they can't find your site again anyhow, why not just identify links that
go "off-site" with a suitable icon. Such as the one used at Wikipedia. I
was just looking at the following page:
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Features_of_Mozilla_Firefox>
Scroll down to the "References" and see the icon next to external links.

When your visitor has a maximized browser window, your new window will
completely cover the original, and they will have a non-functioning Back
button. So what to they do? Go back to google and find someplace else to
surf. Later, when they are tired of surfing, they close the browser, and
... whoops! .. there is YOUR window. But, they are finished so they close
it too.

Well since you are open to "any" advice, my advice is, don't do that.
Stop wanting to do that.

It is an unnecessary annoyance that will drive some users away from your
site not to return.

If the user wants to open a link in a new window they can do so easily
in any browser. If they don't do that it means they don't want that, so
why override their desires and make them angry?

You know, I still find it hard to believe some of these arguments.
Everyone makes it sound like it is the end of the world to all users to
open a link in a new window. I disagree. I don't think it really
matters either way. But who gives a shit anyway

Well I do. Many times I wish to open the link in a new tab. I
extensively use windows and tabs to organize (separate and consolidate)
whatever I am working on.

Well, actual real people have done actual real tests that return actual
real information and they have found that people using web browsers do
in fact actually, really, act that way.

Do you have some evidence to the contrary?

I meant about going through the arguments again.

I like seeing the old arguments over and over, what have you got
against reruns of old things? What are you so bent on freshness?
Can you imagine the silence here if new was The Big Requirement?

Sorry, I don't mind new windows, and since the population is so large,
statistically I must be in the standard deviation therefore, what I
think is probably the norm. (and if not, I don't care anyway)

This devil-may-care-attitude makes it most frustrating to attack
you. And, of course, to attack a Republican, is all the rage
these days... You cunning fox you...

Yes, personal usage.

Personal usage isn't really evidence of anything except of what you,
personally do; it doesn't prove anything regarding anybody else.

Yes, personal usage.

Personal usage tells you that web authors are good at guessing when you
do want a page to open in a new window and when you don't?
