New To Javascript - Accessing Data

I am a coding hobbyist, no formal training, learning by experimenting and reading. I want to start dabbling in Javascript. I have an idea, but my lack of understanding has presented me with a significant stumbling block preventing me from even beginning. I'm used to VBA, through Excel in particular, so things are a bit more straight forward.

If I want to access data, from an excel worksheet for example, to use (access and write to) in a Javascript application, what fundamentals must I research to be able to do this? Is it possible? What are some of the search terms I should use to look for help? Are there any good online resources and if so, would anyone be so kind as to point me in the right direction. Keep in mind I am a beginner.

using the Electron framework and JavaScript, you can read and edit Excel files. One popular library for working with Excel files in a Node.js environment (which can be used in Electron applications) is exceljs.
