OT: Hosting site from home

Bit OT this - but does anyone host a web-site from their home connection?

Thanks

I do, but only for testing stuff. It's obviously not reliable and you
have to keep your PC running all the time..
You can get one of these DSN services, that dynamically update the DSN
entry based on your IP address (the IP address changes often when you
log in from home).
But what I would suggest is, to have a look at the german hosting
market. They have dedicated hosting for really cheap prices. Much
cheaper than here in the States.

I don't eat my own dogfood and use MaximumASP. They work pretty good so
far.

I don't for much of the same reasons Remy pointed out. Despite having a
pretty stable IP, it's been known to change every now and again, which means
I'd need to use a dynamic dns tool (you can do a google search for dynamic
dns if you want to learn more).

If you have a dedicated machine, then it isn't so bad, but you obviously
don't want an even moderately busy site running on your main desktop
machine. XP Pro is limited to 10 connections

Then there's the software licensing cost, namely the operating system :(

There are some cheap .NET hosts out there. WebHost4Life.com is one of them,
too bad they require 1 year payment upfront..

Thanks, I do have a static IP but it's just the upload speed from the house
is awful - it's only 256Kbps (standard for Broadband), I'll checkout that
link.

I have a static IP and dedicated machine, my main gripe is the speed of the
broadband connection - however, what are the licensing costs like?

I wouldn't worry too much about bandwidth if you just plan on hosting a site
with a few images and pages. Obviously, if you plan on hosting phat movies
and downloads and having 10000 visits/hour, you might wanna reconsider.

Assuming you want to run everything on the up and up (which hopefully a real
hosting company would provide), you're main costs are going to be the OS and
the database server. That's where
LAMP (Linux, apache, mysql, php/perl/python) really glow. It is possible to
get linux/apache working with .NET using Mono and mod_mono, but I suspect
you might run into a lot of problems this way.

You'll have to check out the going price for Windows Server 2003 (I think
the cheapest is $1000). As for database, you can use an open database like
MySQL, or a free microsoft alternative like MSDE (2000) or Sql Express
Edition (2005). Not sure about the exact terms of license for that...
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/

Hope that helps,
Karl
