PNG images in Webpage

I had a doubt....
(ie) why the website developers use PNG format images in their webpages....
Is there any special reasons for that...

because PNG images has feature to hav transparent background..
and PNG images give better image quality den jpg.. though PNG images hv large image size den other formats...
